    Special characters = 90 characters?

When trying to use special characters with the swype keyboard (such as: ) I lose 90 characters on the text message. For example, the character limit shows 0/160, then I type any of those characters, and I get 1/70. Typing more of those characters keeps the limit at 70 and does not seem to consume additional characters.

    Device Make/Model: HTC Evo
    Wireless Carrier: Sprint
    Android Version: 2.2 (Froyo)
    ROM Version: Stock HTC
Rooted: No. Phone has never been rooted.

    Hi

This is not a problem with swype. It's a problem with text messaging in general. It used to happen to on Sony Ericssons and Nokias with their proprietary software all the time (even just intserting a french or spanish word into an english text would do it. Talk to your messaging app developer about a possible fix, but some of these characters have pretty long bits because ASCII was hacked to be able to include more characters than just 0-9, A-z and punctuation. You can prove this by going to a character limited input field on a web-form and replicating the issue.

I assumed that the characters cause some sort of header to be added, since additional characters do not also take up 90 characters. If this is the case, wouldn't that mean that these are not standardized SMS characters, and therefore should not be on the keyboard?
