Swype would be PARTICULARLY usefull for smaller screens!!!

06-16-2010, 2:16 PM
I'll definitely pass along your thoughts to our dev team and see if we can't get you a smaller resolution version :)

migr12376987

Currently Swype for android lacks any support for devices using the QVGA (320×240) screen resolution.

This means devices such as the x10 mini and x10 mini pro are unable to make use of this great peace of software

migr12376987
06-19-2010, 6:56 PM
Just to add it seems the HTC Tattoo is another device that makes use of the QVGA resolution and would also benefit from such an addition :)

We've had a few requests for QVGA support so it's something we're looking into. Get all your friends with QVGA screens to post here to increase the likelihood of the brass giving the go-ahead :)

I've raised the possibility of releasing a QVGA version with our devs. We'll see if they can get something pumped out when they have time (which may be a while...things are BUSY here!)

Maybe worth merging the x10 mini support topic with this one as i believe its asking for essentially the same thing.

http://swype.uservoice.com/forums/55960-swype-for-android-beta/suggestions/834505-support-for-sony-ericsson-x10-mini

Would be great to get support since using a normal qwerty on such a tiny screen is hard for those of us with fat fingers

Swype is a breakthrough with interaction. I will definitely spread the word. Even more so when QVGA is supported. Demonstration explains it so much better! Swype might very well become a tool of the future with critical mass.. We might all be swyping, swyped or swype'ling in a very short time.. Sincerely Manolo Folcarelli

It would be nice, if swype had qvga support.

migr13600491
07-31-2010, 3:53 AM
Swype is essentially made to make typing faster on small screens where the typing is not so accurate given the button size on small screens... so please get swype working on qvga resolutions... it would help a lot on devices like HTC wildfire and x10 mini..

migr13761179
08-04-2010, 1:48 AM
I would also like to see a QVGA version of Swype which I could use on the Huawei U8100...

The new HTC Wildfire (on AT&T) also has a QVGA resolution, so there is definitely a market for a QVGA version of Swype.

migr13761179
08-04-2010, 1:51 AM
I should add that it is much more difficult to type on a smaller screen with no support for multitouch.. so Swype would be extremely valuable on these type of devices.

I would also like to encourage Swype to develop a QVGA version of their software on the Android Market. Currently the htc wildfire is one of the best new android phones on the market. I personally own one and would love to be able to use your keyboard on my device.

I've found some links to download swype that works quite ok on wildfire/buzz.

LINKS REMOVED - The sharing of links to unauthorized downloads of Swype is a violation of our Terms of Service. DO NOT post links to external downloads of Swype

It doesn't work landscape. You miss the last column.

My question is, why is it so easy to get swype 1.54.28.7337 from other forums? Why I didn't get an update mail to download this version? The installer app told me that the program was not prepared to fit this size.

I had access to the beta version on my htc magic, but till I found the previous links I wasn't able to enjoy swype.

Swype on the smaller screen resolutions would be absolutely awesome. The built-in Keyboard isn't bad, but having used Swype on a variety of other devices, I'm positive it'd make input on the smaller screen infinitely better!

Just noticed this thread on support for QVGA after I posted this: http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?1596-My-Swype-experience-across-multiple-devices&p=8902#post8902

Just received my beta account activation. I can log in to the installer but when I hit the "Download Swype" button I get the message "Download of the package failed". Having read this thread I assume it's because I have a QVGA device?

I really think the small, resistive screen of the Tattoo would benefit greatly from Swype and I'm keen to try it out, so can you please add QVGA support!

12-09-2010, 7:24 AM
I totally agree with you all. I have a HTC Wildfire and the possibility to use Swype on it would greatly improve the use of my phone. The screen is sometimes a little small to write fast, compared to other WVGA devices f.ex.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could make a QVGA version. Well it's (just) a matter if picture sizes, ain't I'm right? :P

Another request from an IDEOS user for a QVGA version of Swype please.

This phone is great, and I love its small screen. I'd also love to use Swype to make it easier to use its smaller keyboard. By the way, apparently the T-Mobile Comet variant of this phone in the US includes it by default.

I've just registered on this forum purely to ask that you support Swype on the Wildfire. I've heard good things about Swype and would like to try it out.

It would also be a good idea to add something to the installer to state that it won't work on the Wildfire (and other similar devices) due to the screen limitation. Just having a download failed message is rather confusing.

Like T9 prediction text, Swype shd definitely be made available for all phones, including those with QVGA screen size...
With more user using the software and the invincible power of network externalities, it will ultimately become a generic software and phones will be unsellable without it preinstall, which translate to $$$ for the company!!!!
With the plentiful of QVGA phones out in the market, you can be sure that demand is huge (juz not everyone is free enough to post the request)...
Please, make it a standard for all touchscreen devices, The more the merrier!!

I've formulated a way to add QVGA support myself, I have a fully working, up to date version of Swype on my HTC Wildfire.
All you do is edit the assets in the apk file. Swype already has support for the QVGA resolution, it just seems it isn't enabled. To do so just merge this zip with the apk, and resign. It only contains .png images modified for QVGA resolution, and also a SwypeScreen.ini to set the screen options. Note that keyboard images for other screen resolutions are superfluous, such as those suffixed HVGA or FVGA, which I assume will be your source, untouched apk, so to save space you should remove them.

@ Nick Hu

Thanks for posting the workaround, but how to get hold of the installer package in the first place? The only .APK I can find though is the SywpeInstaller.apk, which as I understand it installs the installer service, not the app. The installer service gets as far as the screen size error and stops. A package with the files you describe is nowhere to be found.

So frustrating, I can see a picture of the exact same phone (Huawei IDEOS, look like they call it Comet in the US) on the front page of the Swype site. Why hold this resolution back from the beta version?

Like others, I would love to see this on the Intercept. I use it almost exclusively on my Epic and this input method really is going to become "the wave of the future". There is simply nothing better out there. The main reason I picked the Epic when I did (yeah, I'm weird, gotta have two phones) is because of the slide out keyboard it has. But because of swype, I very rarely slide it out (usually that's only to use the emoticons hardware key since Swype hasn't yet added that to its software keyboard _ hint, hint, hint).

Thanks for the best keyboard to be designed and look forward to using it on my Intercept (again, hint, hint, hint).:o

Still hopefully waiting for support, but for now where did you guys manage to get a modded version? I've used SlideIT before yet Swype is obviously better.. and SlideIT is only a trial.

Just got a new HTC wildfire, very disappointed that i can't get swype. My brothers have the x10 mini and a wildfire and they both wanted it too.

Trying out slide-it to see what it's like, but really really really wanted swype.

Please make it fit!!! Thank you.

The Android version of Swype does not support the screen resolution/dimensions of my Huawei U8100 from WIND Mobile in Canada (http://twitter.com/#!/DaShak/status/30475856098893824) :(

Hey guys!
New to the forum and you guessed it, my phone (Samsung Intercept) has the QVGA resolution so it would be really great to be able to experience this software on my phone.

Been really anxious to start using it, got the beta set-up but cant install it :/

I'm posting this using SlideIT on my wildfire because swipe doesn't support my screen size. swype looks much better though so please support me, lots of people are moving from "dumb"phones to cheap android devices, its a big hole in your market!
Thanks

BTW, there is a poster on xda-developers forums called "marurban" who has patched the .apk in order to provide qvga support.
Swype guys, you need to get in touch with him and find out exactly what he did so that you can provide support! Someone else has done literally ALL the hard work for you and you just need to mimic him!
Everyone else, do some searching using your favourite search engine and see what you can find. his username is particularly effective...

Same too for HTC wildfire - need 240 x 320 resolution. Smaller screens need better input interfaces.

Although making your voice heard here does help support us justifying resources to develop on your resolution, it's probably more important to make your voice heard on your carrier's user forums. The beta test is here for us to test out new functions and features to include in future builds in OEM releases which we're contracted to provide for. Currently our business model just simply doesn't include selling directly to the end user.

So in short: If a carrier wants to contract us to create a QVGA version for one of their phones, we'll probably beta test it here first.

If you see my previous post in this thread you will see that this is actually very little work for you guys cos someone has done all the hard work for you and patched it themselves!

I've looked into the "hack" you described, and it really is just that: a hack. We use something called a ZKB which maps all of the regions of the screen to the prediction algorithm, and if those ZKBs aren't specifically designed for the resolution of the phone you'll run into problems with prediction. This is especially noticeable when trying to enter 2 and 3 letter words. Sorry, but that hack just won't do for general release. We need ALL of the assets (graphical, ZKB, etc) in order to release a QVGA build.

Well, I'm glad you at least finally said that, because at least now we know we're pretty much out of luck. Since Virgin Mobile hasn't even updated to Android 2.2 on the Intercept, I doubt they will be bothered to contract for a version of Swype. I now at least know not to be hopeful that something might happen.

You still have reason to be hopeful. Even if Virgin Mobile doesn't contract us for an official version, if SOMEONE contracts for a QVGA version it increases the odds that we'll wind up releasing a QVGA beta.

Very disappointed to find after going through the rigmarole of installation that Swype will not work on my wildfire looking at the forums this has been going on for some time. Will there be a fix for this as I was so looking forward to trying Swype out

Me too - I registered and downloaded installer following a glowing review in PC Plus - no indication at all that it wouldn't work on a Wildfire - there must be millions of Wildfires out there, great phone!

Wow, appearantly I just bought a well-selling phone ;o)
Even though not everyone on this forum seems to understand the subtle difference between making a request and making a demand, I would still like to add just a bit of weight to the request for a QVGA version of Swype.
Especially since sales of the HTC Wildfire seem to have taken off skyhigh and the successor won't be sold until May, probably many more users may benefit.
