I agree, this was my biggest concern in switching keyboards. Sometimes I just want to "speak" my text, and without the microphone, I would have to go back into settings and change keyboards.

migr8620179
03-05-2010, 6:06 PM
Ditto that, although you don't actually have go back into the settings to change it. For you and anyone else that needs to use voice input before(if) they add this feature, you can just long-press in the text field you're trying to type into until the context menu appears. Select the 'input method' option, then select your keyboard of choice, hit back, and then short-press the input field again, and it should bring up the new keyboard. Still cumbersome, but less so than exiting out, going to settings, etc.

Wish I could change the title -- this should obviously be speech-to-text icon. Doh!

This feature is a must have. Once the upgrade to 2.1 is released to Android phones Swype will be obsolete without this feature.

Swype is so amazing! Just installed it and am already in love with it. But I miss my voice input button. Please include it, in some situations, it is very important! Using a Motorola Droid.

voice is very important, when i'm not in a public place it's my preferred method and switching back and forth is a pain.

Without the voice input, I'm constantly having to switch back to my HTC IME keyboard; kind of defeats the purpose of using this one.

migr8629127

Unless or until they include it, long press on data field allows you to select default keyboard, with voice. Takes an extra second or so.

I Would say that this keyboard has one hell of a good time. I Wanted to add that I am also a tester for swift key alpha. All I would say is follow the native android voice to text script to swype. Meaning, use the script, from the ime htc or stock keyboard. This will enable the use. Now On sym you can use a hold action as the swype button enables you to. Thank You for your allowance in letting test another great input. I believe this should be stock.

Loving swype with my new Nexus One. But I have to agree with you. Trying to switch between keyboards just for the voice button is too much...

Keep up the good work.

Must have this. This type of text input is revolutionary, but don't keep other revolutionary technologies from being used - speech-to-text.

I agree, not just Nexus One, but "Better Keyboard" from the market has this ability on the MyTouch 3G (original). I'd LOVE to have this feature on Swype. As it stands, I switch back and forth between Swype and Better Keyboard to get access to this feature.

I call duplicates. Look for the comment "Add text-to-speech icon or shortcut for Android 2.0+ Devices" and add your votes to that one, because it's the same idea but is already much more popular.

PLEASE DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS ONE ANYMORE - search for "Add text-to-speech icon or shortcut for Android 2.0+ Devices " - it is a HECK of a lot more popular!!

In order to use my phone hands free I need my voice input button back. Would it be possible to have an option to replace the Swype key with the voice text button or create some sort of SIMPLE shortcut to activate it?

This is essential for me to continue using Swype. Thank you!

would love to see this implemented for the android platform too!

Indeed I find myself switching back to the stock keyboard just for the speech to text option- like while driving.

migr9284359
03-28-2010, 10:03 PM
I haven't had any problems with the Swype beta on my Nexus One, but the one thing I find myself wanting on occasion is speech to text. Without having any technical knowledge of the android sdk, I would suspect it's just a matter of adding a button (there's room for one more on the 2nd row of the keyboard) that calls to the speech to text feature. I understand not all android version include speech to text, so perhaps a setting option to enable/disable it?
Regardless, I love Swype and praise the work your team has done, thanks!

03-31-2010, 3:47 PM
I agree with the posters. I'm on a Droid and speech-to-text from any text input box is a key feature that needs to be supported by Swype... Because, let face it, I AM NOT going to revert back to a tap-tap-tap keyboard ever again!

migr9696581
04-20-2010, 11:13 AM
I would love to see this in the keyboard. To me this is the last step to make it a complete replacement keyboard. Right now I have to switch to HTC keyboard when im in my car and switch back after.

I use Vlingo, so missing the mic button is kind of annoying.

migr9666003
04-30-2010, 2:54 AM
This is a very important thing to have the voice to text button the keyboard. I use this frequently and have switched back to the default HTC Sense keyboard because it has this microphone button for quick and accurate voice to text through google's voice-to-text service.

migr9666003
04-30-2010, 3:48 AM
The topic says "text-to-speech" but i'm pretty sure they mean voice-to-text or speech-to-text. The HTC keyboard has a microphone icon that you can tap and speak the words you want to show up. It's very fast and accurate and great for text messages and text input on web forms.

migr1632163
04-30-2010, 1:30 PM
That voice button is the only 'feature' I can think of for swype... Please add, especially now that android 2.1 supports it everywhere. (I have a moto droid if it matters.)

I've added this to the list of feature requests and flagged it as being in high-demand. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

migr10343792
05-14-2010, 1:44 PM
@Timothy H A "mic" button is not the same as text to speech. It is the opposite. You tap the mic button and you talk. As you talk your words are typed into the text box. Android 2.1 supports speech to text entry. It is only fitting that Swype's keyboard has this functional mic button otherwise you have to keep switching between Android's keyboard and Swype's keyboard everytime you wish to speak and then type.

Will we see an update sooner than later? If so would we get an email? Will it self update?

We can't say at this point whether or not voice input will be in the next update. We just pushed out an update to our users last week. If you haven't received the email, you should make sure you're registered at http://beta.swype.com and you'll receive an email when your account has been activated.

migr12337539
06-16-2010, 11:37 AM
Yes, this is kind of an "anti" Swype feature but if you could just kind of tie in to the built in mic so the voice recognition works, tha'td be great!

migr12338607
06-16-2010, 1:09 PM
If this feature gets added can it also work through Bluetooth for those of us that live in hands free States.

migr12338127
06-16-2010, 1:24 PM
on Doid if you do a long press on the text box you can select input method and switch between keyboards, but I definitely think getting a dedicated voice recognition button on the swype keyboard would be great. Up-vote :)

06-16-2010, 2:19 PM
Just want to add that this is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY for those of us that need to do text input without a keyboard for a variety of reasons.

migr12341259
06-16-2010, 3:42 PM
If this is added, I would appreciate it be an option to turn off. That's one thing I hate about the default android keyboard is that button down there taking up space when I don't use it.

An easy add would be if you hold down the swype button it launches the voice text input...

I would also like this button back. I use this when typing is not an option.

migr12304909
06-16-2010, 11:49 PM
Just make it a swipe shortcut a la the Edit overlay. Let us swipe from the Swype button to the far upper right corner to get voice input. It is annoying to have to switch keyboards.

06-16-2010, 11:51 PM
Hey Brian thanks for the quick response. I received the email and was excited to try the "official" beta. It is of course too early for another update. But when one does come out we are all hoping that it will contain the voice input button!

migr8666257
06-17-2010, 1:39 AM
just to throw in my 2 cents...
My PREFERRED text input methods:
1. Voice
2. Swype
3. keyboard

Not having the voice option would probably be enough to keep me from using Swype, although I lived on Swype prior to 2.1 giving me voice.

migr103776
06-17-2010, 2:20 AM
Adding a Ditto here as well :) Please add voice to text!

migr12350875
06-17-2010, 10:04 AM
Yes! The Swype keyboard is great, but sometimes it is easier to just tap the microphone button and use the speech recognition feature. The default keyboard on my phone supports this and I really wish Swype did as well.

I've been a swype evangelist to everyone I know, and have generated many fans. I do find myself constantly having to switch input methods however because the speech input button is such a crucial requirement for me. Would REALLY love to see this added in the next update.

Thank you for your wonderful product and please keep up the great work.

I just spent $500 on the new HTC EVO for sprint and the main selling point was the voice button on the keyboard.... and i love love love swipe and am hoping that i can use swipe anytime i am "typing" ..... and it won't become an issue to have to switch back to my regular keyboard for the voice... but adding the microphone button will allow me to keep the swipe keyboard all the time... i'm really hoping we see it soon.. the need for switching input method stinks! please please please... bring it to us nowwwww... or even putting a hold and have a pop up... or menu and VOICE there!.. that shouldnt be so hard right? Thanks for offering this wonderful beta version for android... and don't sleep till u get the sleep key... just kidding..

06-23-2010, 6:31 PM
I love swype, good job! Even though I can swype without looking, the voice button is much easier. If it had that, there would never be a reason to switch to the HTC keyboard on my Evo.

06-23-2010, 9:29 PM
I dont understand what you guys are requesting. When I have my swype keyboard up and I want to bring up the voice input box, I hit the menu button and there is an option called "speak". I press it and say what I want and it translates it. Am I mnissing what everyone is asking for?

06-28-2010, 11:01 AM
My vote as well. I have been showing EVERYONE I know this. This keyboard is truly revolutionary and innovative. Only thing thus far I can find to really improve it is voice search and the key press pop-ups similar to the stock keyboard. Absolutely fantastic tutorials, very useful for getting started. App is very polished and very quick. Using on Nexus One running 2.1.

migr12512543
06-28-2010, 6:41 PM
The best solution for this, in my opinion, would be to make the voice button a long-press on the space bar. I too would like to use the voice dictation in the car, and that would be the easiest button to hit.

06-29-2010, 12:33 PM
what is everyone talking about... the Mic Tab appears when you hit MENU... Press Menu, Press Mic... and speak. If your Swyping you shouldn't talking, leave the Mic in Menu.

migr12529141
06-29-2010, 1:54 PM
Swype is GREAT!! BUT, Yes, Give us an (even) easier option to access the "Speak" option.
I know we can access this by just hitting the "menu" option, then "Speak', but (although I LOVE SWYPE!) I often utilize the "Speech to Text" option while driving, or my Droid 2.1 is sitting at my desk on my Multi-media/Charger DOCK.
PLEASE! THANK YOU SWYPE TEAM!

That's AWESOME news. I'm really getting to like Swype for everyday use more and more. The ONLY thing I don't like right now is the difference in setup for the numbers and symbols than most standard keyboards. I wish you would change that to match the standard layouts. That and I'd like to see pop-up confirmation of key presses when you are NOT swyping (again, as other standard keyboards do.) Sometimes you need to do it the old fashioned way...and those visual cues do help.

migr12444795
06-30-2010, 2:04 PM
@Brian - Thanks for the wonderful news!

@gerardfalzo - With the latest beta on my Droid Incredible, there is no voice input option in the menu as you have described, unless it is only there for a couple particular contexts which I have yet to find.

migr12514793
06-30-2010, 2:40 PM
I use the voice input while driving, so it would be nice to have it more easily accessible.

migr12491079
07-02-2010, 12:16 AM
Thanks for the update on the Mic button. I probably won't use it as much as some people but it's always great to have the option. I'm Swyping faster than I talk anyway. And I don't text while driving no matter what. Keep up the good work.

migr12644591
07-04-2010, 3:16 PM
You guys are brilliant! Love swype. Yes, a button added to the keyboard would be great. A suggestion would be to remove the tips button, and put it on the "menu" as an option where the "speak" option currently is. In the meantime, also need the "speak" to be available on the menu button for email as well. Sometimes I respond with voice to emails, too. Thank you for an amazing program.

migr9133831
07-06-2010, 3:23 AM
I LOVE Swype, and like so many others I would love to see a "voice input" button. That is the only thing I use the native keyboard for anymore. I am, however, very confused...I have been reading the comments here, and I've checked a number of times. On my Nexus One, when I press the "menu" key I get a number of options but I do NOT get a "voice" option. Can someone help me understand what I'm missing? Just for myself, I would be very happy if there is ANY way to use voice input on Swype right now...at least until the next beta update can be released. If there is a "menu" option for this, I could almost do without a key on the main keyboard if that meant keeping the "smiley" button.

So as a suggestion, it would be AWESOME if that could be an option on Swype...let us choose to have either the "voice input" button or the "smiley" button we currently have?

Thanks to the entire Swype team, and please keep up the great work!!!!!!

To provide a bit of further explanation: There are some peculiarities about how the voice input feature in Android integrates with the IME. You'll actually find that certain text fields don't show the microphone button, even on the default Android VK. We've found that if voice input is activated in these instances, it is highly unstable and can cause crashing and freezing. As you can imagine, these situations can vary when you're talking about different devices and different frameworks. This makes integration in the beta a bit of a quagmire. It's something we'd definitely like to do, but it'll take some work on our end before it's ready.

How long has this been "in the works"?
That 1 little button would do wonders for this app!

07-16-2010, 1:45 AM
I believe many people text while driving (though not everybody wants to admit to it) and swyping on the road is extremely difficult and dangerous. It would be wonderful to be able to speak and give that option to drivers who just can't put the phone down.

migr12797347
07-16-2010, 8:54 AM
It shouldn't be hard to add, since the phone already does it...
Why not just add the button & send out "update" notice?
Step it up a bit? =]

I can't wait for this too. I use it so much that I am reverting back to the stock for now. Once it is implemented I will install this back on my phone. I hate to give up this keyboard, but the voice button is a must.

migr13520831
07-29-2010, 12:41 PM
Did you know..... If you press and hold the input field you will get an "Input Method" dialog. If you switch that to the Android keyboard you will have this ability. This would be a good thing to do like when you jump in the car or something, and want to go hands free that way. I think the button on swype would be cool too, but until it gets there, this is an easy way to get around it.

I long for a a voice recognition button as well. I'm actually quite impressed with the SlideIT voice recognition button. It's a little different from the android voice recognition button in that it give you multiple FULL SENTENCE best guess options whereas android only gives you one take it or leave it guess.

If you use Handcent Sms and use the pop-up notifications, there's a voice input button as an option on the pop-up. Might work well for some of you guys =). I never actually use it myself, but it's nice to know it's there, haha.

Long press on the text entry box. It will bring up the Edit text menu. Click Input method. Change it to the Android keyboard. You will lose the ability to "swype" if you change from the Swype keyboard however.

Ya, i just came on here to ask about this exact same thing, only to find the first comment to be exactly what i was going to ask for. Swype is by far the best keyboard for any phone, but it would be complete perfect on the Android platform once users have voice to text option

The version of Swype pre-installed on the Droid 2 (1.64.40.9380) has the Voice Input button. I'm a bit curious as to why this feature wasn't released to Beta before landing on a device. What exactly is the point of me being a Beta tester when the version I'm testing is months old and newer versions with much-needed features like this are released without being released to the Beta testers?

If we are being used as a marketing tool to sell Swype to carriers, that's fine, but call it a Preview and not a Beta. Being part of a Beta generally means that we are part of the development of the product. We should provide valuable feedback on cutting-edge features that nobody else has access to. The Swype Beta, while making me feel good that I have the best keyboard on the market, does not make me feel like I am giving anything back or actually helping shape this product into what it should be. The mere fact that the Beta forums are not restricted to actual beta testers tells me this isn't really a beta test at all :(

The voice input button is an interesting case. It, like the double-tap-to-edit feature, won't work without some device integration. The build we use for the beta is our "reference build" which is made to work generically on any Android install. Because different devices use different voice recognition services, and their frameworks call the function differently, it's hard to include it in our reference build. We are regularly revisiting it, though, and trying to make it possible.

Haven't been able to download the update yet for some reason (server too busy?) - but I'm SERIOUSLY disappointed if there is no mic button in this release. Texting while driving is being banned in more and more and more US cities, increasing the need to use Googles Voice actions or Vlingo to automate text entry. I don't know know what Swype is thinking. All it does is force me NOT to use Swype as my main keyboard.

Just updated to Swype 2.4.44.10912 and there is still no voice input key. This is the only thing missing to make Swype the perfect keyboard replacement. In fact, when I started using Swype, I referred to it as a "keyboard revolution". It truly is, and I'm really lovin it, but it is only missing this one feature in my opinion.

I had a wrestling match on my hands getting Swype to work under the Froyo update for Incredible, so I was thrilled that this updated version seems to work well.

I am very surprised to see, however, that voice input has not been added. That is a significant feature of the current crop of Android phones. Its absence seriously undermines the usefulness of Swype and, as a result, Swype remains my second choice of input behind the native keyboard.

I understand from a friend that the mic button appears on the Swype keyboard included with his Droid X, so I assume it is being held back for inclusion only with licensed devices. If you are not going to give it to the beta testers, whose time and feedback is supposedly an investment in your product, then why not let them pay for the "upgrade" to support this inherent Android functionality?

I don't want to seem ungrateful. Swype is nice to have, however in its current form the beta is more like a "feature" than a complete product. I see a previous post says that voice control needs to be implemented differently for particular phones. Seems like a good question for me to ask of some other developers.

FYI there is a June beta out there that was modded to add the Voice Input button for the HTC Incredible. I tried it out for a week and and and was very happy with it, but didn't feel right running a hacked IME. I'm a legit beta user.

Seemingly, since some hacker did it, you guys can do it as well :-) Not sure why you haven't, it's clearly the #1 request! Maybe your betas are vanilla least common denominator for a wide variety of phones and some don't have voice or something? Looking for a reason...I read more carefully and understand now. The reference build is vanilla for all platforms. Thanks for taking our input.

Thanks. This is going to be an important add. At this point I have to go back to the android keyboard or go through any other number of steps to be able to just do a quick response to a text or fill in an input box from a web page when i could easily speak it. Loving Swype but can speak much faster than I can Swype and infinitely faster than normal androik keyboard typing.

Keep up the great work.

Agree. Must have.

This is why we buy Androids instead of iPhones :P

Also, I hope Swype is not so silly as to think that a voice button detracts from their uniqueness, and sees it as some kind of competition. This would be short sighted :(

Please please add it in!

Don't know what version of Swype and what phones everyone is using, but on the X there is a speech input key right next to the period. It is amazingly annoying and opens the voice input all the time when I want to type a period. I agree that it needs to be left in there, but also the ability to change it of move it.

Sorry if this addressed elsewhere in this thread...didn't take time to read all 15 pages :)

I have been meaning to request an integration of google speech to text feature into swype but I guess many other users have had the same thought as I. Other than this feature, swype is an awesome piece of software to use and I absolutely love using it and recommend it to everyone I know.

I like the option of having the Voice Input button, but i wish there were a way to remove it if you wish. I'm a bit clumsy and tend to hit the wrong buttons. Having to hit backspace real quick isn't a big deal, but having the Voice Input button right next to the period and smiley buttons causes me to hit it more than other buttons, and since it causes a bit of lag and delay from having the voice command prompt come up it's a bit annoying.

Are there any plans to make the location of the button customizable, or to have an option to remove it?

Then the Swype settings page comes up.

Just got accepted into the beta on my Xperia X10, and noticed the microphone icon on the Swype keyboard. So far, pushing it does nothing, so I'm assuming it doesn't work/isn't supported on the X10, or is there something else I need to be doing to enable it?

Edit: Scratch that, should have read a bit more before posting.

On my HTC EVO, it needs a longer "pause" before "timing out" and showing what it thinks you said. Swype tends to cut me off mid-sentence.
I tried the same sentences with the OEM and Swype and the OEM seems to allow a longer pause between words. Neither one adds periods or any other punctuation.

Switching the "SYM" and microphone keys would be an improvement, plus reduce accidentally activating the microphone.

This my first Swype installation. I have had it with the first release of Swype for Android.
Andriod is 2.2 (Doesn't show as 2.2.0, 2.2.1 or anything like that, but it is the HTC EVO with all the updates)

I was one to ask for the Speak to Text button also, however that was before I realized I can hit the settings button and hey look, there's a button that says 'Speak'.

I am more than happy with this, and would much rather have my regular spacebar back. With how short it became to make room for adding the mic button, I am constantly hitting the period.

To make everyone happy, add an option in that allows you to toggle the added button.

Looking forward to the next release.

I loaded the Swype Beta shortly after 2.1 with text-to-speech and missed the key. After a couple weeks, I didn't think more about it. Sometime recently, it appeared on the Swype keyboard. I suspect it was the December update, but I only noticed it in the last two weeks. I hit it instead of the "return" key.

I know you can't please everyone. My vote is to remove the microphone.

I'm going to reiterate this, because it is becoming more and more annoying. Give us the option to hide the voice button. The shorter space is throwing everything off. I am always hitting '.' instead of the space, and for some reason, while I'm swyping, the Mic likes to add itself in.

Besides, it's easy enough, you push the menu button, then click the 'Speak' button to speak.

+1!

While I certainly appreciate the work that went into integrating the speech-to-text feature I am constantly annoyed by accidentally hitting the microphone button. As a sysadmin I tap in a lot of IP addresses and I frequently hit that button, especially when one-thumb typing.

Having the option to disable that key would immediately enhance my user experience.

i wholeheartedly agree, i wish we had the option to disable/enable it at our discretion. it is really annoying when you hit it in the middle of typing and it pops up. i know there are some who love it, and others who hate it.....and i would hope both parties could be appeased.

is there a way to make it not respond unless pressed alone? swyping over it should not activate it.....it should be a single keypress and not in the middle of typing a word.

I'm confused. I'm running what I believe is Beta: 2.29.71.20186.t100 on a Samsung Intercept running Froyo (2.2.2) stock. I do not see a means to call up the voice input. I wish this were configurable in settings to either enable or disable it. Then if enabled, perhaps a long-press on the swype key which would call up Voice, Tutorial or Tips buttons, or perhaps on the Language "Q" key (I doubt people will be switching languages often).

If it's in there... would someone kindly point me to where? Thanks.
