View Full Version : Customizable long-press delay to get alternate characters

This is a feature that other keyboards I've used have -- I don't like the long-press delay to be quite as long as it is by default -- I want to be able to get to the alternate characters quickly, without having to enter symbolic mode. A customizable long-press time would be great! =)

I second that! :) On Smart Keyboard you can.

Like in smart keyboard pro. It makes typing numbers and symbols sooooo much faster and makes the keyboard in general seem speedier.

This will help with the long-press on backspace to do word-delete quicker...

I would love this as well as I have gotten used to the 150 - 200 ms Long Press Delay time that I have set the default keyboard under CyanogenMod 7.

+1. I use many long-press characters routinely, and the fixed delay really slows me down.

+1 for this option. Now is too long!

I agree, the long press delay is far too long. When you feel that a viable alternative to long pressing is to press into the symbol keypad, find the particular symbol you're looking for, then press that symbol, then press back into the ABC keypad, it's too long.

Please let us know if there's anything in the works regarding this, would be much appreciated.

Does anyone know if there is going to be an option for this?
Would definitely make typing a lot faster for me :)

I would also like to see an option to decrease the long press time.

Like in every other keyboard
app on the market right now (or so it seems)? Sounds like a good idea to me. After switching from SlideIT bach to this, I noticed the speed difference almost instantly. I never waited long enough for the long-press to click in.

I agree, the default length is fine for those getting used to typing on a touchscreen, but a shorter delay would make the keyboard much faster.

SwiftKey has this too.

This would be a particularly useful feature with something like Swype because you usually only rarely tap letters, so you could set this timer particularly low before running into issues of it misinterpreting you.

Agreed, this could make it much faster to delete words and enter alphanumeric combinations - for the long numbers I just go to symbol or the numpad, but for entering passwords and such, it's a bit annoying to switch back and forth.

I dunno if the delay got longer in the latest beta update or if I am just getting more impatient wasting a couple hundred milliseconds of my life each time I want to use an alternate character, but it sure would be nice if it was a configurable option when I hit the options key on the swype keyboard.

really need this too. the long-press timer is so long that i often end up thinking the alternate symbol would input but then end up with a m instead of the !. this is one of the pet peeves with swype currently.

+1 to this.
The slowest part of writing is waiting for the 'long-press timer' to activate.

Maybe in english is not too much of a problem, but when writing in different languages it is.

fyi: merged threads.

And I have the opposite problem. I can't even type a normal key without it almost instantaneously changing to the alternate key. I have to barely graze the key for a absolute fraction of a second, and even then it sometimes places the alternate key. This is driving me crazy, all my words come out looking like cuss words, with strange characters taking the place of letters. Argh, it makes this keyboard unusable! Is there no way to adjust the speed of this feature?

I should note: This is on a Thrive tablet.

+1 for the decreased long press-time.

This was on of the main reasons I finally switched to SlideIT.
The other was that when I swipe the wrong word and press the delete key once and short, only the last letter is
deleted and not the whole wrong word. I only could long press, too long press, again.
With SlideIT after a wrong swiped word I just press once delete and the whole word is deleted.

After two weeks of SlideIT, I must say that the pros of SlideIT are a bit more.
I miss the some shortcuts with the Swype key though, and the arrow keyboard with selection but I mostly I keep SlideIT keyboard, it seems a bit faster after all.
